Language Arts
In ELAR this week, we will begin our novel study on Tiger Rising. We will also begin discussing characters, character traits, and how characters change throughout the story. We will review parts of speech and the writing process.
Math
In math this week, we will begin our unit covering place value of whole numbers. In 4th grade, we will
- Represent the value of the digit in whole numbers through 1,000,000,000 using expanded notation, standard, word, and expanded form.
- Interpret the value of each place-value position as 10 times the position to the right and as one-tenth of the value of the place to its left.
- Read numbers aloud using base-ten language
- Interpret the value of each place-value position as 10 times the position to the right and as one-tenth of the value of the place to its left.

Next week in math, we will continue with place value of whole numbers.
- Compare and order whole numbers to 1,000,000,000 and represent comparisons using the symbols >, <, or =.
- Read the comparison of two numbers aloud using the words less than, greater than, or equal to.
- Round whole numbers to a given place value through the hundred thousands place.
- Use math vocabulary to compare quantities.
Social Studies
In Social Studies this week, we will define what a region is and classify regions including their characteristics by creating a classroom map divided into sections (regions).
Science
In we will review science safety expectations and practice using science tools correctly. We will conduct investigations through a variety of hands on labs!
Watches and Phones
We have already noticed that more and more of our students have been wearing smart watches to school, so we want to take a minute to be clear about expectations for those devices.
Students are not permitted to communicate on their personal devices during the school day. (The same rule applies for their iPads.) This includes parents. Please help us in reinforcing this expectation. If you need to get in touch with your son/daughter during the day, please email your child's teacher or call the front office.
We have talked about these expectations with the students. We've let them know that if they are using their smart watch, cell phone, or other personal devices to communicate, they will receive one warning. After that one warning, we will ask for those devices to stay at home.
