Language Arts and Social Studies

In Reading, we will review story elements and the author's purpose. We will begin to plan our author's study unit and research.

Grammar- we will review compound sentences.

In Social Studies, we will continue to explore the effects of the railroad industry on life in Texas, including changes to cities and major industries

In class, we are learning about how the development of railroads impacted the growth of cities in Texas. Students are exploring how railroads helped people travel, move goods, and connect communities, which led to the growth of towns and major cities across the state.

We have been discussing how some cities grew quickly because they were located along railroad lines, while others that were bypassed by the railroad often did not grow as much. Students are also learning how the railroad influenced jobs, trade, and daily life in Texas during this time.

Home Connection Idea:
Ask your child to share what they have learned about why railroads were so important. You might also look at a map of Texas together and talk about how transportation helps cities grow today. Encourage your child to make connections between the past and present!

Math

In Math this week, we will continue to:

Represent data on a frequency table, dot plot, or stem‐and‐leaf plot marked with whole numbers and fractions
Solve one‐ and two‐step problems using data in whole number, decimal, and fraction form in a frequency table, dot plot, or stem‐and‐leaf plot

Next week in Math, we will:

Distinguish between fixed and variable expenses
Calculate profit in a given situation
Compare the advantages and disadvantages of various savings options
Describe how to allocate weekly allowance among spending, saving, including for college, and sharing
Describe the basic purpose of financial institutions, including keeping money safe, borrowing money, and lending

In Science this week, we will:

Describe the cycling of matter and flow of energy through food webs, including the roles of the Sun, producers, consumers, and decomposers

If you would like to purchase a book for your child to have signed by the author, you are welcome to use the author’s preferred local bookstore or any bookstore where you typically purchase books. If you order through the authors’ preferred bookstore, the books will be delivered to the school, and the authors will bring them with them on the day of the event for distribution.

Hats and Toys

Our classrooms are a place for learning, growing, and having fun with friends. To help everyone stay focused, we ask that hats and toys stay at home. That way, our classrooms can be distraction-free, and we can all enjoy our time together while learning new things.

Tennis Shoes for PE & Extended Specials Day (CTT)

Please help ensure your child wears appropriate shoes on PE days and Move & Groove (Fridays). Additionally, every other Wednesday, the 4th grade has extended specials during CTT. The dates are outlined for the remainder of 2025 below. Thank you for your help in making sure your child is safely dressed for the gym!
